Tusk promises harsh punishment for Ukrainian after attack in Jarosław

Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk said that a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen detained after a knife attack at a monastery in Jarosław will be punished in accordance with Polish law.

“The attacker from Jarosław is in the hands of the Polish police. Investigative actions are ongoing. The perpetrator is a citizen of Ukraine. He will be punished with the full severity of Polish law,” — Tusk wrote on social network X.

The Prime Minister also expressed condolences to the relatives of the victims of the attack.

Poland's Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński made a similar statement. He said that investigative actions are being carried out with the detainee, and psychological assistance was provided to people who were at the scene of the attack.

The attack occurred on the morning of September 24 on the territory of the Jarosław Abbey in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. According to police, a man with a knife wounded four men and one woman. All five were hospitalized. One of the injured priests later died, and the condition of two other victims was assessed as very serious.

The suspect was detained immediately after the attack. Police confirmed that he is a 31-year-old citizen of Ukraine. A knife was seized from him. The circumstances are being investigated by the police and the prosecutor's office.

The motive of the attack has not yet been officially established. Polish law enforcement agencies continue to interview witnesses and establish the exact sequence of events.
