Poland reveals new details of the case of a Ukrainian after an attack in a monastery
The Polish prosecutor's office reported new details about a 31-year-old citizen of Ukraine suspected of a knife attack on the grounds of a Benedictine sisters' monastery in Jarosław. The investigation established that the man entered Poland from Germany on the morning of September 24 and was heading toward the Polish-Ukrainian border.
As a prosecutor's office representative told at a press conference, the suspect was driving toward the Korczowa border crossing, but did not leave the territory of Poland. For what reason he ended up in Jarosław and what happened before his appearance at the monastery, investigators continue to establish.
According to the preliminary reconstruction by the prosecutor's office, the man entered the territory of the Jarosław abbey on his own, after which he entered the kitchen premises. It was there that his first contacts with people who later became victims took place.
The investigation believes that the man took the knife directly from the monastery kitchen. Then the events moved to the church located on the abbey grounds. The prosecutor's office continues to establish the sequence of attacks and the suspect's actions in different premises of the complex.
The attack took place on the morning of September 24. At around 9:30 a.m., police received a report about a man with a knife on the abbey grounds on Benedictine Street. Mass in the church was scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. After the attack, the complex was cordoned off, and police officers, prosecutors, and experts worked there.
In total, five people were injured — four men and one woman. The prosecutor's office clarified that among the injured were three clergymen and two laypeople. One of the wounded priests was taken to hospital, where he later died. Two other victims remain in critical condition, threatening their lives.
The 31-year-old man was detained directly at the scene by police officers from Jarosław. Law enforcement officers are conducting initial procedural actions with him. The possibility of further interrogation and other procedures will depend on doctors' conclusions.
A blood sample was also taken from the detainee. It will be tested for narcotic and other intoxicating substances. At the moment, the prosecutor's office does not have confirmed information on whether the man was under their influence.
The motive for the attack also remains unknown. The investigation does not yet link the incident to national, religious, or political motives and has not reported any pre-existing relationship between the suspect and the victims.
The police of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship previously confirmed that the detainee is a citizen of Ukraine. Law enforcement officers continue to question witnesses and collect evidence, and the prosecutor's office stated that the inspection of the scene may take many hours.
