Zelensky reacted to the Ukrainian's attack in Polish Jarosław

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said he is shocked by the attack in Polish Jarosław, which, according to local law enforcement, was committed by a Ukrainian citizen. He expressed condolences to the relatives of the deceased priest and called for a quick and thorough investigation of the crime.

“We are shocked by this evil. At the moment, it is known about the death of a priest and injuries to several other people,” — Zelensky wrote.

The president wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

Zelensky emphasized that the perpetrator must bear full responsibility in accordance with Polish law.

“We expect a fast and thorough investigation of all circumstances. It is painful that people are capable of such terrible crimes. Justice must prevail,” — the president stated.

The attack occurred on the morning of September 24 on the territory of the Benedictine Sisters' Abbey in Jarosław, Podkarpackie Voivodeship. According to Polish police, a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen attacked four men and one woman with a knife. All five were taken to hospitals, and one of the wounded priests subsequently died.

The suspect was detained immediately after the attack. The prosecutor's office reported that the man entered Poland from Germany at night and was heading towards the border crossing point Korczowa on the border with Ukraine, but did not cross the border.

According to preliminary investigation data, the man appeared on the abbey grounds and entered the kitchen area. A kitchen knife is believed to be the weapon of the attack. The events then continued in other rooms of the complex, including the church.

The motive of the crime has not been officially established yet. The Polish prosecutor's office continues investigative actions and is establishing the circumstances of the incident. Samples were also taken from the detainee to test for possible alcohol or drug content.

Earlier, Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk stated that the attacker will be punished “with all the severity of Polish law.” President of Poland Karol Nawrocki also demanded that law enforcement quickly establish all circumstances of the tragedy.
