Ukraine ready to combine energy and maritime ceasefires — Shmyhal

Ukraine is ready to consider a possible cessation of mutual strikes on energy infrastructure together with agreements on security in the Black Sea. First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal stated this on the air of the national telethon.

According to him, Kyiv supports a full energy ceasefire: Russia must stop strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, after which Ukraine will, for its part, stop long-range attacks on Russian oil refining and other energy facilities.

"This should be a full energy ceasefire. That is, we are not exchanging one thing for another," Shmyhal explained.

The minister noted that Ukraine is ready to consider such a format more broadly — simultaneously with a maritime ceasefire. According to him, this is related not only to security issues but also to food exports and the operation of sea routes.

"We are also ready to look comprehensively at an energy ceasefire together with a maritime ceasefire, because this includes food security, it opens a grain corridor for both us and the enemy," Shmyhal stated.

In his assessment, the restoration of safer shipping would ease the economic situation for Ukrainian farmers. An energy ceasefire, in turn, would allow Ukraine to reduce risks to the energy system during the upcoming heating season.

Shmyhal said that the possibility of an energy ceasefire was discussed during contacts between the presidents of Ukraine and the United States, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump. The details of such an approach were also discussed by the head of the Ministry of Energy in New York with U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright.

However, there are currently no agreements with Russia on ceasing strikes. According to Shmyhal, Ukraine is ready for such a discussion, but the key question is whether Moscow will agree to a mutual cessation of attacks.

Earlier, Shmyhal stated that Ukrainian special services had received two Russian documents with detailed plans for attacks on energy infrastructure this winter. According to him, they list potential targets, the required number of means of destruction, and types of weapons for strikes.
