Trump called talks with Xi productive but didn't disclose details

US President Donald Trump called his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington productive, but after the talks the sides did not announce any new major agreements on key contentious issues.

Bloomberg reports. The talks between the leaders of the US and China took place on September 24 at the White House as part of Xi Jinping's state visit.

Trump positively assessed the conversation with the Chinese leader and claimed progress in relations between the two countries, but did not specify which new agreements had been reached. Expected concrete decisions on further reducing trade barriers and creating a new mechanism for cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence were not publicly presented by the end of the visit.

The most notable economic decision associated with the summit became known even before the start of the talks. The US and China extended the current trade truce for another two months. It allows the sides to preserve previous tariff agreements and avoid a new round of trade confrontation.

In a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China published after the meeting, it was stated that the economic and trade teams of the two countries held a new round of consultations and reached an additional agreement. Beijing also did not disclose the detailed terms.

Xi Jinping stated that China and the US should expand areas of practical cooperation and reduce the number of contentious issues. Special attention was paid to artificial intelligence. The Chinese leader proposed continuing the dialogue on the risks and benefits of AI, and Trump, according to the Chinese statement, also spoke in favor of developing contacts in this area.

Taiwan remained one of the most sensitive topics. Xi again outlined Beijing's position and called on Washington to carefully approach this issue. The Chinese side did not provide details of Trump's response.

The leaders also discussed Russia's war against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East and the Korean Peninsula. No separate decisions on these issues were announced following the talks.

The meeting took place amid attempts by Washington and Beijing to stabilize relations after a prolonged period of trade and technological restrictions. At the same time, key disagreements between the world's two largest economies—in tariffs, technology access, rare earth metals, and Taiwan—remain.
