Poland's prosecutor's office reveals the condition of the suspect in the monastery attack

31-year-old Ukrainian citizen Igor M., suspected of a knife attack in the monastery complex in Polish Jarosław, cannot yet be questioned and formally acquainted with the charges due to his mental state. Psychiatric experts have found pronounced psychotic symptoms in the man.

This was reported on September 25 by RMF24, citing a representative of the District Prosecutor's Office in Przemyśl, Małgorzata Taciuch-Kurasiewicz.

According to the experts' conclusion, the man's current condition does not allow him to participate in procedural actions. He has been diagnosed with acute psychotic disorders, severe psychomotor agitation, thought disturbances, and an inability to maintain logical contact. According to the prosecutor's office, the suspect requires antipsychotic treatment and is currently in a psychiatric hospital.

The investigation separately emphasizes that the experts' conclusion concerns exclusively Igor M.'s current condition and does not determine whether he was sane at the time of the attack. This issue will be examined separately during the investigation.

The prosecutor's office has already formulated charges of murder, attempted murder, and causing grievous bodily harm, but cannot yet formally present them to the suspect. After his condition improves and the medical obstacles are removed, the investigation will be able to carry out the necessary procedural actions.

In addition, the prosecutor's office intends to apply to the court for a three-month pre-trial detention. Due to the man's condition, if the motion is granted, the detention should take place in a medical facility. The court has already assigned him a public defender.

Investigators continue to question witnesses and collect evidence. The results of a blood test, which should determine the possible presence of alcohol or narcotic substances in the suspect's body at the time of the attack, are not yet available.

The attack occurred on the morning of September 24 on the premises of the Benedictine Sisters' Abbey in Jarosław, Podkarpackie Voivodeship. According to an official statement by the District Prosecutor's Office in Przemyśl, the 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen wounded five people. One of the victims later died in hospital.

The prosecutor's office also stated that it currently has no confirmation of information that appeared in Polish media that the suspect had previously participated in combat operations in Ukraine.
