Germany reacted to Russian attack on NAS building in Kyiv
The German Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the Russian strike on the building of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in central Kyiv on Monday, September 28.
The statement was published on the official X account of the German Foreign Ministry.
Berlin emphasized the importance of the National Academy of Sciences as one of Ukraine's key scientific institutions and condemned the strike against the country's civilian and scientific infrastructure.
A Russian drone hit one of the buildings of the National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district on the afternoon of September 28. After the strike, a major fire broke out, and rescuers evacuated people and conducted search and rescue operations.
According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, at least one person was killed and seven more were injured as a result of the strike. Rescue operations and elimination of consequences continued throughout the day.
German Tagesschau notes that the strike hit the historic building of the academy in the center of the Ukrainian capital. Footage from the scene showed a severe fire and significant damage to the building.
On the same day, Russian troops continued a prolonged drone attack on Kyiv and other regions of Ukraine. The Dobrobut medical center in the capital was also damaged, and strikes and falling debris were reported in several districts of the city.
The Russian strike on the National Academy of Sciences drew reaction from other European officials as well. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that Ukrainian science was targeted, and expressed solidarity with the victims and rescuers.
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna also condemned the Russian attacks on educational and scientific institutions. He said that international pressure on Russia must be increased.
The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine brings together dozens of research institutes and is the country's largest state scientific organization.
