Fire in NAS building in Kyiv extinguished after Russian strike

Rescuers completely extinguished the fire in a building of one of the complexes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi district on the evening of September 28, which broke out after a Russian strike. As a result of the attack, one person died and six were injured.

This was reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

After the extinguishing was completed, State Emergency Service units and engineering equipment continued working at the strike site. Rescuers are dismantling damaged building structures and examining the premises affected by the impact and subsequent fire.

During the rescue operation, firefighters used a three-section ladder to bring two people down from the third floor of the damaged building. Due to the fire and destruction, some people could not leave the building by normal means.

The National Academy of Sciences building was hit by a Russian strike on the afternoon of September 28 during a prolonged drone attack on Kyiv. After the impact, a large fire broke out in the building, and significant rescue forces were deployed to extinguish it.

During the day, Russian forces used a large number of strike drones against Ukraine, including a significant proportion of jet-powered drones. The main target area was Kyiv region and the capital.

According to the Ukrainian military, from 06:30 to 18:30 Russia launched 124 strike drones of various types at Ukraine, 86 of which were jet-powered. Air defense forces shot down or suppressed 86 drones, including 49 jet-powered ones.

Hits by Russian air attack weapons were recorded at 27 locations, and debris from downed targets fell in four other places. Even by 18:30, individual strike drones remained in Ukrainian airspace.

Simultaneously with the NAS building, the Russian attack also damaged other civilian facilities in Kyiv. In particular, the strike hit the Dobrobut medical center in the Holosiivskyi district. According to the State Emergency Service, eight people were injured there, and one person was rescued by emergency service personnel.

Thus, work directly at the medical center was completed by evening, while dismantling of structures continued near the damaged building of the National Academy of Sciences after the fire was extinguished.
