Kremlin envoy held new talks in Washington, discussed Ukraine - journalist

On September 28, Russian President's special envoy Kirill Dmitriev was in Washington, where he held a new round of talks with American officials on a possible end to Russia's war against Ukraine.

This was reported by Reuters journalist Steve Holland with reference to an American official, via a link. According to him, the parties continued "constructive discussions" on a peaceful settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

A separate topic was possible American-Russian projects in the energy sector after the war ends. The American official did not specify which agreements or areas of cooperation were discussed.

The current meeting was a continuation of contacts between Moscow and the team of US President Donald Trump. As "Kurs Ukrainy" previously wrote, last week Dmitriev met in New York with Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Witkoff and Kushner simultaneously maintain contacts with the Ukrainian side. In recent weeks, Washington has been trying to restore the negotiation process and is promoting several interim agreements that could reduce the intensity of the war before a broader deal is concluded.

In particular, President Volodymyr Zelensky told Axios that the American side is promoting the idea of mutual cessation of strikes on energy infrastructure. Among other proposed steps are restoring the work of the Black Sea grain corridor and holding trilateral talks involving Ukraine, Russia, and the US.

Ukraine has declared readiness for an energy truce on the condition that Russia also stops strikes on Ukrainian energy and critical infrastructure.

Thus, Dmitriev's meeting in Washington took place against the backdrop of the Trump administration's attempts to first promote limited de-escalation agreements while continuing negotiations on a broader end to the war. Discussions of potential energy projects between the US and Russia, according to the American official, relate to the post-war period.
