From January travel in Germany will become more expensive: new Deutschlandticket price

In Germany, from January 1, 2027, the Deutschlandticket — the nationwide public transport pass — will become more expensive again. Its price will rise from the current 63 to 66.80 euros per month.

The new tariff was approved on September 30 by the Deutschlandticket Coordination Council, which includes representatives of federal and state transport authorities. This was reported by Handelsblatt citing dpa.

Thus, the monthly pass will increase by 3.80 euros, or about 6%. Prices for discounted ticket types will also change. Deutschlandticket Job will cost 63.46 euros, and the student Semesterticket — 40.08 euros per month.

This will be yet another price increase for the popular pass. Since the beginning of 2026, the standard Deutschlandticket has cost 63 euros per month, previously its price was 58 euros.

However, in 2027 the price was set for the first time not through separate political bargaining, but using a special formula. The index takes into account the dynamics of transport companies' costs, including personnel and energy expenses.

This mechanism is intended to make price changes more predictable and reduce annual disputes between the federal government, states, and transport companies over the ticket price.

The federal government and the states together allocate a total of 3 billion euros annually to finance the Deutschlandticket — 1.5 billion euros from each side. The amount of these subsidies remains fixed, while the expenses of transport companies grow.

According to the Association of German Transport Companies VDV, about 14.5 million people use the Deutschlandticket. The ticket allows unlimited travel on buses, trams, subways, urban railways, and second-class regional trains throughout Germany.

However, the Deutschlandticket normally does not apply to long-distance ICE, IC, and EC trains, nor to intercity buses. The pass is issued as a personal subscription that can be cancelled monthly.

For Ukrainians living and working in Germany, the change means additional expenses of approximately 45.60 euros per year per person when using the standard Deutschlandticket.
