Hryvnia ended September with strengthening
For Thursday, October 1, the National Bank set the following official exchange rates: - US dollar – 44.6819 UAH (-0.1805 UAH to the official rate for Wednesday, September 30); - euro – 50.7166 UAH (-0.2112 UAH to the official rate for Wednesday, September 30).
Rates were set at 16:00 on September 30 and reflect the following trends:
1. On the last day of September and the third quarter, the interbank currency market felt the absence of demand for non-cash currency. Quotes began to fall almost immediately after the start of trading. At 12:00, the average transaction price was 44.7204 UAH – 16.9 kopecks lower than on Tuesday. In addition to the National Bank, exporters also sold currency today. By 14:00, quotes dropped to 44.656 UAH on the bid side. The average price by the end of the trading session fell even more, so the NBU was forced to lower the official dollar rate for Thursday by 18 kopecks.
2. The euro on the international FOREX market on Wednesday made sharp fluctuations in the range of 1.1329-1.1380 dollars, reacting to the publication of various statistical data for the Eurozone countries, as well as GDP and inflation indicators in the US for the second quarter. At the time of fixing, the euro was sold at 1.13506 dollars – 1.4 points lower than on Monday (1.1352 dollars). Taking into account the decrease in the official dollar rate, the NBU lowered the official euro rate for Thursday by 21.1 kopecks.
On the cash market, the selling prices for the dollar today decreased in some cities, while in others they remained at yesterday's level. In particular, in Kyiv and Dnipro by evening the dollar could, as yesterday, be bought at 44.85 and 44.90 UAH respectively. But in Kharkiv, Lviv, and Odesa the dollar became cheaper: in Odesa – by 2 kopecks (to 44.88 UAH), in Kharkiv – by 4 kopecks (to 44.93 UAH), and in Lviv – by 8 kopecks (to 44.82 UAH).
The end-of-month factor played a role: on both the interbank and the cash market, the need for hryvnia was greater than the need for foreign currency. However, tomorrow a new month begins, and this factor will cease to operate.
