On the morning of October 3, the Pivnichnyi (North) Bridge in Kyiv was attacked by Russia. Shortly before the strike, the Air Forces warned of a jet-powered UAV moving towards the bridge.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the road surface and the trolleybus contact network were damaged. Traffic from the left bank to the right bank is blocked.

This is the second major bridge over the Dnipro River whose traffic has been severely restricted in recent days. The Pivdennyi (South) Bridge, after a series of strikes on October 1-2, is completely closed both for cars and metro trains.

Below is the situation as of the morning of October 3. For the bridges that were not damaged today, the latest traffic regime published by the Kyiv City State Administration during an air raid alert is indicated. On the evening of October 2, the authorities revised the scheme several times.

How Kyiv bridges are working

  • Pivnichnyi Bridge — damaged. Traffic from the left bank to the right bank is blocked. Before today's strike, during an air raid alert, traffic from the right bank to the left was also restricted here. After the strike, the authorities have not yet separately clarified the regime for the second direction.
  • Pivdennyi Bridge — completely closed for cars and metro trains regardless of air raid alerts. The city is awaiting an expert opinion on the condition of the structure. The metro is technically ready to resume service at a "yellow" threat level, but only after specialists' approval.
  • Darnytskyi Bridge — operating. During an air raid alert, traffic from the right bank to the left is carried out in one lane. Bus routes No. 22 and 91, which previously went via the Pivdennyi Bridge, have been redirected through this bridge.
  • Metro Bridge — operating. During an air raid alert, traffic from the left bank to the right bank is blocked.
  • Podilskyi bridge crossing — operating. During an air raid alert, traffic from the left bank to the right bank is blocked.
  • Paton Bridge — operating in both directions. According to the latest published scheme, during an air raid alert, traffic from the right bank to the left is restricted.

How to get to the right bank during an alert

According to the latest published scheme, during an air raid alert, from the left bank to the right bank there are actually two main options — Darnytskyi Bridge and Paton Bridge.

The Pivnichnyi Bridge in this direction is closed after today's strike, the Pivdennyi Bridge is completely closed, and on the Metro Bridge and Podilskyi bridge crossing, traffic from the left bank to the right bank is stopped during an alert.

Therefore, it is likely that there will be increased load and traffic jams on Darnytskyi Bridge and Paton Bridge during restriction hours.

What about public transport

After the damage to the Pivnichnyi Bridge, routes of some ground transport have been changed.

Buses No. 21, 73, and 101, which usually follow via the Pivnichnyi Bridge, have been redirected via the Podilskyi bridge crossing, the "Poshtova Ploshcha" metro station, and European Square.

"Kyivpastrans" also reports delays of buses No. 21, 73, 101, and 114, as well as trolleybuses No. 29, 30, 31, and 47.

South Bridge is not being opened yet

Traffic on the Pivdennyi Bridge remains completely closed. Trains of the green metro line across the Dnipro are also not running.

The decision to resume traffic should be made after an expert assessment of the condition of the structure. Research is being conducted by specialized scientific institutes.

The metro has stated that they are technically ready to resume train service across the bridge at a "yellow" air raid alert level, but only after receiving a positive conclusion from specialists.

Thus, after damage to the Pivnichnyi Bridge and closure of the Pivdennyi Bridge, transport load is redistributed primarily to Darnytskyi Bridge, Paton Bridge, Metro Bridge, and Podilskyi crossing. During air raid alerts, the possibilities to cross the Dnipro become even fewer.

The situation may change during the day. Before traveling, check the latest updates from the Kyiv City State Administration, police, and "Kyivpastrans".
