Barcelona and its surroundings experience the rainiest day in the last 20 years
Spanish Barcelona and its surrounding municipalities experienced the rainiest day in the last 20 years, according to Європейська правда.
Relevant data from the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) is reported by EFE, according to "European Pravda".
Torrential rains that hit the coast of Catalonia on Saturday in the afternoon brought from 100 to 200 liters of precipitation per square meter to the Barcelona region by midnight Sunday.
In the Raval district, 3.4 liters of precipitation fell per minute, and 36.1 liters in half an hour. These data, as explained by Meteocat, almost double the figures recorded on March 24, 2017, when 95.4 liters fell in this area.
Meteocat notes that this morning precipitation in Catalonia remains heavy and torrential, covering vast areas and continuing without interruption.
Bands of rain are slowly moving toward the north of Catalonia, shifting from east to west.
"We still have several hours" of precipitation, Meteocat reports on social media, where it is also noted that "the amount of precipitation will be exceptional both in volume and area".
Heavy rains also fell at night and on Friday morning in the provinces of Tarragona and Castellón. On Friday afternoon, an orange weather warning was in effect in Tarragona, Valencia, the Balearic Islands, Murcia, as well as in the provinces of Almería, Granada, and Albacete.
The bad weather is spreading to other areas of Spain and is forecast to continue through the weekend. In the western part of the country, a storm is possible on Sunday.
It was reported that in the Spanish town of Madrigueras in the province of Albacete, a 102-year-old woman died as a result of sudden flooding, and about 90 people had to be rescued.
It is also worth noting that in the summer, at least two women died and two minors were injured as a result of sudden flooding and a landslide in the province of León in northern Spain.
