Ministry of Defence revises procurements and frees up 15.6 billion UAH
The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine together with the General Staff has revised part of the current and planned arms procurements. As a result, the agency expects to free up 15.6 billion UAH and redirect these funds to more pressing needs of the Defence Forces.
As reported by the Ministry of Defence, the decision was made after analysing the needs of the army and changes on the battlefield. Part of the procurements that were previously considered a priority have now lost relevance or require revision.
Some current contracts are planned to be terminated, and part of the agreements not yet concluded will be abandoned. For certain items, delivery volumes will be reduced in line with the current needs of the army. Such a possibility, the agency noted, is provided for by the terms of the relevant contracts.
Deputy Minister of Defence Mstyslav Banik stressed that the effectiveness of defence spending lies not only in savings, but also in the constant adjustment of procurements taking into account the situation on the front line.
Among the reasons for the revision, the Ministry of Defence cites changes in requirements for certain types of weapons. The tactical and technical characteristics of some models no longer correspond to current combat tasks. In other cases, suppliers cannot produce the planned quantity of weapons or the relevant models have not yet been codified.
In addition, part of the needs of the Ukrainian army is already covered by deliveries financed by partner countries. Some combat tasks can also be fulfilled with cheaper means, which makes it possible, with the same volume of funding, to purchase more of the necessary weapons.
The final list of procurements subject to revision was defined by the General Staff. The Ministry of Defence has already transferred the necessary documents to the Defence Procurement Agency for implementation. Manufacturers affected by the changes have been informed about further actions under the contracts, taking into account their current performance and payments made.
The agency clarified that the termination of existing contracts will take place in accordance with the law. The list of weapons under the contracts that were decided to be abandoned will not be published for security reasons.
The freed-up funds will be directed to the procurement of weapons and other means that are currently in greater demand for the Defence Forces.
