Shmyhal reports strike on an important energy facility in the capital
On October 8, Russian forces struck one of the important energy facilities that supply Kyiv with electricity. The attack caused power outages in several districts of the capital, and energy workers began restoration work.
This was reported by the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal. Information about problems in the power system was also confirmed by the National Power Company Ukrenergo.
"An attack occurred on one of the energy facilities important for the city of Kyiv. Energy workers are doing everything to quickly restore power. The attack by Russian drones is ongoing. All services are involved," — Shmyhal wrote.
The minister did not specify the name and location of the damaged facility, nor the extent of the destruction.
Kyiv faces electricity supply problems
Throughout October 8, power grid disruptions were observed in the capital. Damage to energy equipment reduced the voltage in the high-voltage network that supplies Kyiv and the Kyiv region.
Ukrenergo explained that emergency power outages had to be applied to prevent equipment overload and stabilize the power system.
Unlike planned restrictions, emergency outages are introduced without a predetermined start and end time.
Therefore, previously published hourly outage schedules in areas with emergency restrictions are temporarily not applied.
Energy workers will be able to return to forecasted schedules once the grid stabilizes.
Outages affected city transport and water supply
Electricity problems affected not only household consumers but also urban infrastructure.
In particular, on October 8, the Kyiv Metro temporarily stopped trains on all lines due to a voltage drop. Escalators also stopped working.
Train movement was later restored, including on the red line. During recovery, intervals between trains could be increased.
In addition, power outages affected water supply facilities in the capital.
According to Kyivvodokanal, the voltage drop led to reduced water pressure in the right-bank part of the city.
Problems were reported in Holosiivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Solomianskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts.
Thus, damage to energy infrastructure caused disruptions in several vital systems of the capital at once.
Energy workers continue restoration
The Ministry of Energy reported that the necessary emergency and repair services are involved in the aftermath.
The main task for specialists is to restore power supply to consumers and ensure stable operation of damaged sections of the power system.
Restoration work is complicated by ongoing Russian attacks. According to Shmyhal, at the time of his statement, drones continued to attack the city.
Final completion dates for repairs have not been announced yet.
Ukrenergo urged citizens to follow updates from local distribution system operators and, if possible, limit use of high-power electrical appliances.
This measure is necessary to reduce the load on equipment that continues to operate after damage to certain network elements.
Russia steps up strikes on energy infrastructure
The current attack occurred amid a new wave of Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities.
On October 7, Russian forces carried out a massive missile and drone attack, damaging critical infrastructure in several regions.
Damage to power grids led to forced electricity restrictions. The situation remained difficult the following day as restoration work continued.
Ukrenergo emphasized that Russian attacks create additional risks for stable operation of the power system. Energy workers have to simultaneously restore damaged equipment and prevent overload of operating networks.
For Kyiv residents, this means the electricity situation may change depending on equipment condition and the progress of emergency restoration work.
The company promised to inform about changes in restriction schedules after grid stabilization.
