Bernham assured Zelenskyy that Britain will not change its position on support for Ukraine
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Andy Bernham assured President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy that London will continue to support Kyiv despite changes in the international political situation. The British government also intends to accelerate the supply of weapons for Ukrainian air defense.
Bernham said this on October 14 during a meeting with Zelenskyy at Downing Street in London, reports The Guardian.
Before the start of the talks, the British Prime Minister emphasized that Ukraine can count on continued support from the United Kingdom.
"You have seen the solidarity and support you receive from everyone here in Britain. We are on your side, and this will not change," — Bernham said.
The head of the British government also expressed condolences to the families of Ukrainians who died as a result of the latest Russian shelling. He noted that the past days have been especially difficult for Ukraine due to massive attacks, including on Kyiv.
Bernham separately focused on US President Donald Trump's proposal for an energy ceasefire. According to him, Zelenskyy demonstrated readiness to discuss the cessation of strikes on energy infrastructure in order to protect the population of Ukraine ahead of a difficult winter.
However, the Russian side continued to attack Ukrainian critical infrastructure facilities, despite the American initiative.
"Unfortunately, we see new attacks from Russia on Ukraine's critical national infrastructure. It is once again clear to the world who the aggressor is in this conflict," — the British Prime Minister emphasized.
Bernham assured that the United Kingdom will continue to provide Ukraine with all possible assistance. He also announced the acceleration of deliveries of British air defense assets.
In particular, this refers to Lightweight Multirole Missile (LMM) missiles, designed to counter aerial targets, including drones. The British government announced a supply package worth £45 million. Deliveries of weapons worth £10 million from this amount will be accelerated to meet Ukraine's most urgent needs before winter.
In addition, Bernham instructed ministers to prepare additional support measures, including new sanctions against Russia, military and financial assistance. The relevant proposals should be presented in the coming weeks.
In response, Zelenskyy thanked the British Prime Minister and the people of the United Kingdom for their consistent support of Ukraine.
"We have withstood and continue to hold on thanks to strong partners. I am very proud that one of our strongest partners in history is your people, Andy," — said the Ukrainian President.
Zelenskyy also said that he intends to discuss with Bernham the problems arising from restrictions on Starlink satellite communications and difficulties in obtaining intelligence information from partners.
According to the Ukrainian leader, Russia continues to strike with ballistic missiles and hundreds of drones, so it is not yet possible to talk about the actual cessation of attacks on energy infrastructure.
On the same day, Zelenskyy met with King Charles III of the United Kingdom at Buckingham Palace. The President thanked the monarch for his support of Ukraine and the assistance of the British state.
