Zelensky: Ukraine is not losing the war, but losing people and time
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine is not losing the war against Russia, but is losing people and time every day due to continued Russian attacks. That is why Kyiv is interested in a speedy cessation of hostilities.
The head of state said this on October 20 during a joint press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finnish President Alexander Stubb following talks in Oslo.
Answering a question about Ukraine's position in the war, Zelensky emphasized that he does not consider what is happening a defeat, but drew attention to the human cost of the ongoing Russian invasion.
“Of course, we are not losing this war. But we are losing people. Because of Russian attacks, we are losing people and time,” — said the president.
According to Zelensky, the war deprives Ukrainians of the ability to live a normal life. Its consequences are especially hard on children, who cannot fully live their childhood.
The president explained Ukraine's interest in ending the war as quickly as possible by the desire to stop human losses. He expressed hope that the United States and European partners will help achieve an end to Russian aggression.
Zelensky also confirmed Ukraine's readiness to continue peace negotiations and consider various options for a ceasefire.
He stressed that Ukraine's strong position in diplomatic negotiations is ensured primarily by the resilience of Ukrainian servicemen, who continue to hold the defense.
“They remain unbreakable on the battlefield. That is what helps me stay strong during any negotiations,” — noted Zelensky.
The statement came after negotiations between Ukrainian, American and European delegations in Oslo. The participants discussed possible conditions for ending the war, security guarantees for Ukraine, and further diplomatic steps.
It is expected that on October 21, US Special Representative Steve Witkoff will present to the Russian side proposals prepared following the consultations. There are no final agreements on cessation of hostilities yet.
