American company Apple on October 28 introduced a new generation of MacBook Pro, for the first time equipping its laptops with a full touch screen. The devices received OLED displays, M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, an updated design and support for touch control. The cost of the new products starts at $2,899.

This is reported on Apple's official website. The new laptops are presented in two versions - with screen diagonals of 14.2 and 16.3 inches.

The main change is the appearance of the PROLED XDR touch display based on tandem OLED technology. Previously, Apple consistently refused touch control in laptops, offering users a keyboard and trackpad. Now you can interact with the macOS interface directly through the screen.

Users will be able to scroll pages, zoom images with gestures, move objects between applications and manage windows with touches. To work with the display, Apple also redesigned the lid hinge so that the screen remains stable when pressed.

Touch control will work in conjunction with the familiar keyboard and trackpad. macOS 27 automatically converts touches into mouse commands for applications that have not yet been adapted to the new technology.

What has changed in MacBook Pro specifications

PROLED XDR displays have a variable refresh rate up to 120 Hz, maximum brightness up to 2000 nits and a contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1. Extended color gamut P3 and Adobe RGB are supported.

The laptops run on M5 Pro and M5 Max processors. The maximum amount of unified memory is 128 GB, and internal storage is 16 TB. According to Apple, the new chips are designed for professional video processing, 3D graphics, programming and local execution of artificial intelligence models.

Another notable change is the appearance of Dynamic Island - an interactive area at the top of the screen, familiar to iPhone users. It is intended for notifications, Spotlight search, multimedia control and interaction with the updated Siri AI voice assistant.

Apple also reduced the thickness and weight of the devices. According to the manufacturer, the 14-inch model weighs about 1.36 kg, and the 16-inch - about 1.81 kg. Claimed battery life reaches 24 hours.

The laptops are equipped with three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI and MagSafe connectors, an SDXC memory card slot, a 12 MP camera and six speakers. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support is provided.

Prices and start of sales

In the US, the cost of the new MacBook Pro depends on screen diagonal and installed processor:

  • MacBook Pro 14 inches with M5 Pro - from $2,899;
  • MacBook Pro 16 inches with M5 Pro - from $3,399;
  • MacBook Pro 14 inches with M5 Max - from $4,499;
  • MacBook Pro 16 inches with M5 Max - from $4,799.

Pre-orders started on October 28 in 30 countries and regions. In Apple stores and at authorized resellers, the new models will appear on November 6. The timing of official sales and prices in Ukraine have not yet been announced.

As TechCrunch notes, the release of the touchscreen MacBook Pro marks a significant revision of Apple's approach to laptop control. Previously, the company experimented with the Touch Bar, but later abandoned it. Now, instead of an additional panel, users have the ability to interact directly with the main screen.

The new model became the second major MacBook Pro premiere in two days. On October 27, Apple introduced the regular 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 processor, which is not equipped with a touch OLED display.
