The Democratic Party of the USA, following the midterm elections on November 3, secured a majority in the Senate and, according to projections by American television networks, is regaining control of the House of Representatives. The Republican Party of President Donald Trump is losing control of Congress, and the president himself has already expressed readiness to accept the results of the vote.
According to CNN, the Democratic Party has secured a majority in the Senate and, according to the network's projection, is regaining control of the House of Representatives. The Democrats have won the 51 seats necessary for control of the upper chamber. As reported by The Guardian, the party took senate seats from the Republicans in several states, including Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate were up for reelection. Control of the upper chamber requires a majority of 51 seats. Before the vote, the Republicans controlled both chambers of Congress.
One of the most important results was the victory of Democrat James Talarico in the Senate election from Texas. He defeated Republican Ken Paxton, securing the Democratic Party's first victory in a Senate election in that state since 1988.
Other notable victories included the election of Adam Hamilton as senator from Kansas and Annie Andrews from South Carolina. The Democrats also took senate seats from the Republicans in North Carolina, Ohio, and Iowa. In the House of Representatives, the party won several seats in districts that had previously been represented by Republicans.
The success of the Democrats was not limited to Congress. Party members also won gubernatorial elections in Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, and Texas, where Republicans previously held the offices.
US President Donald Trump said he accepts the election results and is ready to cooperate with the Democrats. He said this in an interview with The New York Times on the evening of November 3, when the first results of the vote were already known.
"I am absolutely ready to accept these results. We will work with the Democrats and hope for cooperation. I think we can come to an agreement on some things", - said the American president.
At the same time, Trump refused to consider the defeat of the Republican Party as a personal failure. On Fox News, he emphasized that he does not perceive the election results as a blow to himself and congratulated the Democrats on their victory.
"Congratulations to the Democrats. They did a good job", - said the president.
Trump explained his party's defeat by the fact that he personally did not participate in the elections and the Republicans failed to ensure sufficient turnout of their supporters. He also criticized individual candidates whom he supported during the campaign.
In the interview with The New York Times, the president acknowledged Americans' dissatisfaction with high gasoline prices, but emphasized that he does not regret the decision to start a war with Iran and considers it correct.
The new Congress will begin its work in January 2027. Control of both chambers by the Democrats will significantly limit Trump's ability to implement his legislative program during the last two years of his presidential term. The Democrats will be able to more actively conduct parliamentary investigations, control the activities of the administration, and influence the confirmation of high-ranking officials and judges.
At the same time, the president will retain the right to veto bills passed by Congress. Trump has already said that he is ready to discuss certain issues with the Democrats, including raising the US debt ceiling.
