Moldova expects to purchase between 10 and 50 million cubic meters of natural gas from Ukrainian companies. This is significantly less than the volumes previously discussed on the market. Chișinău continues commercial negotiations with Ukrainian suppliers, trying to agree on prices below European exchange quotations.

This was stated on November 3 by Moldova's Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu on Radio Moldova.

According to the minister, the state-owned company Energocom is negotiating with both state and private gas suppliers from Ukraine. The final volumes will depend on fuel availability, current contracts, and agreed commercial terms.

Junghietu clarified that the previously discussed possibility of purchasing 500 million cubic meters of gas does not correspond to the country's real needs. Instead, the potential volume of additional purchases is 10-50 million cubic meters.

However, this refers only to possible volumes of future operations. Final contracts for the specified amount of gas have not yet been announced.

The main condition for expanding purchases will be price. The Moldovan side expects to receive Ukrainian gas cheaper than on the European market, but does not disclose the specific pricing formula, as negotiations are ongoing.

Albasat reports that the minister emphasized that Moldova would not continue negotiations without the prospect of receiving more commercially advantageous terms.

At the end of October, Energocom already contracted the first 2 million cubic meters of gas from private suppliers from Ukraine. According to Moldovan authorities, the price was lower than European exchange quotations.

The search for additional suppliers comes amid rising natural gas prices in Moldova. According to Radio Moldova, the purchase price of fuel for November is 84-86 euros per MWh compared to 76-78 euros in October.

Meanwhile, Energocom reported that it has already contracted the necessary gas volumes for the 2026-2027 heating season. Therefore, negotiations with Ukrainian suppliers are primarily aimed at diversifying purchases and finding better price conditions, rather than overcoming a confirmed fuel deficit.
