Employees of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) detained the first deputy head of the SBU Department for Protection of National Statehood, General Serhiy Duka.
This was reported on November 4 by "Ukrainska Pravda" citing its own sources in law enforcement agencies.
The detention took place amid NABU's disclosure of new details of Operation Carthage, within which anti-corruption agencies exposed a criminal organization. According to the investigation, its members systematically paid bribes to high-ranking law enforcement officers for the unimpeded operation of fraudulent call centers and other illegal businesses.
On the morning of November 4, it became known that NABU detectives were conducting searches at the home of the head of the SBU Main Directorate of Internal Security, Anton Kravchuk.
Earlier, the anti-corruption bureau reported obstruction of investigative actions by one of the high-ranking SBU officials. According to NABU, during a search based on a ruling of an investigating judge of the High Anti-Corruption Court, the official threatened detectives with the use of firearms and prevented them from accessing the scene of investigative actions.
According to sources of "Ukrainska Pravda", it was specifically about General Serhiy Duka.
However, the publication does not specify whether Duka's detention is directly connected to the investigation of the criminal organization as part of Operation Carthage. Official information about the suspicion announced to the general and the specific grounds for detention is absent in the publication.
