Social networks are spreading false information that Iran allegedly threatened to launch missile strikes on Kyiv, Lviv and Odesa in case of a new attack by the United States. The Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine established that the screenshot being distributed in support of these claims is a forgery.

The Center for Countering Disinformation reported this on November 4.

According to the Center, several Telegram channels published an image that was presented as a frame from Iranian television broadcasts. It showed a map of Europe with marked Ukrainian cities, allegedly among the possible targets of Iranian missiles.

The authors of the publications claimed that Tehran is considering strikes on Ukrainian territory in response to U.S. military actions against Iran.

However, verification showed that in the original broadcast of the Iranian TV channel a different image was shown, and possible missile strikes on Ukraine were not discussed at all.

Thus, the distributed map with marked Kyiv, Lviv and Odesa was falsified. It does not confirm the existence of any statements by the Iranian side about the intention to attack Ukrainian cities.

The Center for Countering Disinformation stressed that such information injections are aimed at spreading panic among Ukrainians.

The purpose of the manipulation is to create an impression among the population of an additional threat of missile strikes from Iran, which is not confirmed by the content of the original TV story.

The CPD urges to be critical of such reports, especially if they are accompanied by separate screenshots without the possibility of verifying the original source.
