President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope that the victory of the Democratic Party in the US midterm elections will lead to a restoration of the balance of power in American politics and an increase in military and financial support for Ukraine. In his opinion, changing the balance of power in Congress could also influence Russia's position on continuing the war.

Zelensky said this in an interview with German television channel ZDF. The conversation with the Ukrainian president was conducted by TV host Jan Böhmermann for the program ZDF Magazin Royale.

According to Zelensky, the results of the American elections give reason to expect increased support for Ukraine, although there are no specific decisions on additional assistance yet.

The president emphasized that Ukraine maintains the support of both major political parties in the US. He noted that Democrats during the election campaign advocated for continued assistance to Kyiv and paid significant attention to Russian aggression.

“I am grateful to the Republicans too, but Democrats speak very clearly about supporting Ukraine, about helping Ukraine,” — Zelensky stated.

Separately, the head of state drew attention to the Democrats' intention to restore closer cooperation between the US and European allies. In his assessment, relations between Washington and Europe have weakened in recent years, complicating joint efforts to end Russian aggression.

Zelensky expressed hope that the new political landscape in the US would help restore the balance of power and create conditions for increased American assistance.

The president also linked the possible expansion of military and financial support to prospects for peace negotiations. In his opinion, if Congress begins to actively support funding and arms supplies to Ukraine, it could change the calculations of the Russian leadership.

Zelensky suggested that against the backdrop of increased Western assistance, Vladimir Putin may reconsider the feasibility of continuing the war. Such a scenario, according to the Ukrainian president, could bring negotiations on ending hostilities closer.

In the midterm elections on November 3, the Democratic Party won a majority in both chambers of the US Congress — the House of Representatives and the Senate. The new composition of the legislative body will begin work on January 3, 2027.

At the same time, the transition of Congress under Democratic control does not automatically mean a change in US foreign policy. President Donald Trump will retain the powers of head of the executive branch, and decisions on funding and military assistance will require following established legislative procedures.

As Deutsche Welle notes, Zelensky views strengthening ties between the US and Europe as an important condition for further international pressure on Russia.
