U.S. President Donald Trump said that a large-scale agreement on ending Russia's war against Ukraine may be reached soon. According to him, the future deal could extend beyond the Ukrainian issue and concern all of Europe.
Trump said this on November 5 during a conversation with journalists in the Oval Office of the White House. The broadcast was conducted by the White House.
"An agreement will be reached. It will be a large-scale deal, and it will concern not only Ukraine. I can even say that perhaps it will concern all of Europe. It will be a great, beautiful deal, and everyone will be thrilled", - said the U.S. president.
The statement came after Trump confirmed a personal meeting with Special Representative of Russian President Vladimir Putin Kirill Dmitriev, who was at the White House on November 5.
When asked by journalists about the content of the talks with Dmitriev, the U.S. president replied that he could not reveal the details of the conversation. At the same time, he expressed confidence that a settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian war is near.
He also confirmed that he did not meet that day with the Ukrainian delegation that was also at the White House.
Earlier on November 5, U.S. First Lady Melania Trump held a meeting between representatives of Ukraine and Russia dedicated to a humanitarian operation in the occupied Oleshky, Kherson region. Among the participants were the head of the parliamentary faction "Servant of the People" David Arakhamia, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets, and the Russian representative Kirill Dmitriev.
According to the White House, the humanitarian operation allowed the evacuation of nearly 800 people. Melania Trump called for using the experience of the temporary ceasefire to seek a broader peace settlement.
At the same time, Donald Trump did not specify which issues and states could be covered by the agreement he announced. He also did not name specific conditions or terms of its possible conclusion.
The statement came ahead of a new round of trilateral talks between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, scheduled for November 10-11 in Abu Dhabi. The preparation of this meeting was previously reported by U.S. President's Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
During the conversation with the press, Trump was also asked whether he raises the issue of Russian strikes on Ukrainian civilians during contacts with the Russian side.
The U.S. president stated that he constantly draws attention to the deaths of civilians, but also raises the issue of losses on both sides.
According to Trump's estimate, the total number of casualties in the war on the Russian and Ukrainian sides is about 25,000 people per month. He did not name the sources of this estimate. The U.S. president emphasized that the bloodshed must be stopped and again expressed hope for a quick end to the war.
Separately, during the same conversation, Trump commented on the U.S. ban on Russian fuel imports. One journalist asked him about a tanker with Russian diesel fuel, which, according to the journalist, is heading to the United States despite the legislative restrictions introduced in 2022.
Upon learning that the relevant law was passed by Congress and signed by his predecessor Joe Biden, Trump negatively assessed the document.
"Then it's probably a pretty bad law. I will study this issue. Certainly", - he stated.
The law on halting imports of Russian oil and energy carriers was adopted in April 2022. At the same time, on October 9, 2026, the U.S. Department of the Treasury issued a special license allowing certain operations with Russian diesel fuel, including its import. The legality of such permission remains a subject of dispute, since the legislative ban of Congress formally remains in force.
Trump did not report specific plans to repeal or review the relevant law.
