Questions and answers

What is Ukraine’s interbank foreign exchange market?

Ukraine’s interbank foreign exchange market is the market where licensed banks trade non-cash foreign currency with one another. Companies and individuals do not normally trade there directly; they submit currency orders through their banks. Banks use professional trading and information systems to place and accept buy and sell orders during the trading day.

Why can my bank execute my currency order at a worse rate than the interbank quote shown here?

A client order is not necessarily passed directly to another bank. A bank first matches incoming client orders internally. For example, demand from several clients may be offset against currency sold by another client. These internal transactions are executed at the bank’s client rate rather than at the quoted interbank rate.

The bank enters the interbank market mainly to cover a net shortage or sell a net surplus. The difference between its client rate and the interbank market may include the bank’s spread, commissions and execution risk. For businesses with regular currency turnover, even a small difference in the rate can become material over time.

How can a business use interbank quotes when buying or selling currency?

When your bank allows a target rate to be entered in a currency order, use current interbank quotes as a reference instead of accepting an unspecified market rate. Submit the order while the market is active and monitor whether the quoted range still supports your target. For example, if you enter a dollar sell order at 51,36 while the bank can resell the currency near 51,47, the order may be commercially attractive to the bank.

Current Ukraine publishes interbank quotes in the free interbank section with a delay. Businesses that require real-time data can use the paid Interbank Pro service.

Which currencies are traded on the interbank market?

Licensed banks can trade a range of currencies on the interbank market. Many transactions are routed through the US dollar: a bank buys or sells dollars first and then converts them into the required currency at the relevant cross rate.
