Dmytriev held talks with Witkoff and Kushner in New York
Russian President's special envoy Kirill Dmytriev met in New York with U.S. President's special envoy Stephen Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The parties discussed Russian-American relations and a possible settlement of Russia's war against Ukraine.
CNN reports, citing sources directly familiar with the talks, that the meeting took place on September 24. No specific agreements or results of the meeting have been reported so far.
Dmytriev arrived in the United States to continue contacts between Moscow and Washington after Vladimir Putin's talks with Witkoff and Kushner in the Kremlin in early September. The Russian representative also participated in that meeting.
On the eve of Dmytriev's trip, Reuters reported, citing two sources, that the talks in New York were expected to address a possible peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine, economic cooperation between Russia and the United States, as well as energy issues.
The new round of contacts took place amid talks between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. After that meeting, Rubio stated that the discussions included, in particular, the possibility of a limited cessation of strikes related to energy and grain transportation.
Contacts through Dmytriev, Witkoff, and Kushner have become one of the parallel channels of negotiations between Moscow and Washington. Dmytriev heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund and is Putin's special envoy for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries.
Previously, Dmytriev had already held lengthy talks with Witkoff and Kushner. Before their meeting with Putin on September 5, they spoke for about three hours over lunch. After the talks in Moscow, the U.S. representatives traveled to Kyiv for contacts with the Ukrainian side.
The current meeting in New York confirmed the continuation of the Russian-American negotiation channel, but the parties did not publicly announce a new plan to end the war, a ceasefire agreement, or other specific decisions.
