How Kyiv residents can travel to work and school on October 5: what's happening with bridges and metro after new strikes
Kyiv begins the new working week with a changed traffic scheme across the Dnipro. After a series of Russian attacks, the city revised restrictions on bridges during air alerts, and on October 4 a new strike hit the Pivnichnyi Bridge. We explain which scheme is in effect as of Sunday evening and what those who need to travel to work or school on the morning of October 5 should keep in mind.
Most of the main crossings over the Dnipro remain accessible. However, recent days have shown that during new alerts the police and city services may temporarily close certain sections and promptly change public transport routes.
Therefore, those who need to travel from one bank of Kyiv to the other on Monday should allow extra time and plan a backup route in advance.
Which traffic scheme is in effect on the bridges
The Kyiv City Military Administration published an updated procedure for traffic across the Dnipro during air alerts.
Pivdennyi Bridge. Traffic from the left to the right bank during an air alert is unrestricted. In the opposite direction — from the right to the left — traffic is restricted for the first 15 minutes after the alert is announced, after which it resumes.
You can enter the Pivdennyi Bridge in the direction of the left bank from the Stolychne and Nadniprianske highways, and also from the “Vydubychi” bus station.
Podilskyi-Voskresenskyi Bridge. After an air alert is announced, traffic in both directions is stopped for 15 minutes. The same 15-minute restriction applies after the all-clear signal. Then traffic fully resumes.
Pivnichnyi Bridge, Darnytskyi Bridge, Paton Bridge and the Metro Bridge operate without special restrictions during an air alert according to the KMCA published scheme.
However, this is only the base mode. In case of a new attack, infrastructure damage, or a decision by the police, a specific crossing may be temporarily closed irrespective of the general scheme.
What happened with the Pivnichnyi Bridge on October 4
On the morning of October 4 during the Russian attack, a hit was recorded on the roadway of the Pivnichnyi Bridge. Later, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that a “shahed” struck the bridge.
After the strike, traffic was temporarily restricted, and public transport routes had to be changed. According to city authorities, two people were injured: one was hospitalized, and the other received help at the scene.
Buses No. 21, 73, 101 and 114 temporarily changed their routes. By 12:05 they returned to their routes, although they continued to run off schedule.
Trolleybuses No. 29, 30, 31 and 47 also operated under a changed scheme for some time. At 14:13 the city reported the restoration of their usual routes.
Thus, by midday, public transport traffic through this area began to recover, but the situation at the Pivnichnyi Bridge remains dependent on new alerts and police decisions.
Why passengers of buses No. 22 and 91 need to especially monitor updates
The Pivdennyi Bridge has been targeted by Russian attacks several times, so the traffic scheme across it has changed repeatedly in recent days.
Even after the publication of the new general procedure, on October 4 during individual alerts the city temporarily rerouted buses No. 22 and 91 from the left to the right bank via the Darnytskyi road and rail bridge.
In particular, vehicles were directed via the Dniprovska embankment, Berezniakivska Street and further over the Darnytskyi Bridge. After the all-clear, routes could return to their usual pattern, and with a new threat — change again.
Therefore, passengers of No. 22 and 91 on the morning of October 5 should especially check “Kyivpastrans” operational updates just before leaving home.
The green metro line is carrying passengers between the banks again
For trips across the Dnipro there is an important change: from October 4, Kyiv restored passenger service on the above-ground section of the green metro line under the yellow threat level.
Before the launch of passenger operations, test trains ran on this section in both directions.
Now, under the yellow threat level, green line trains can carry passengers between the right and left banks of the Dnipro.
Under the red threat level, traffic on the open section stops. In this case, trains operate separately on the "Syrets" — "Vydubychi" and "Osokorky" — "Chervony Khutir" sections.
Thus, the ability to cross the Dnipro by metro on the morning of October 5 will depend not only on the state of the infrastructure but also on the air threat level at the time of travel.
What to consider on the morning of October 5
The main risk for the morning rush hour is not a permanent closure of all bridges, but rapidly changing restrictions during air alerts.
Even a 15-minute closure during heavy traffic can quickly create car queues and delay public transport. If certain routes start being redirected again, additional load can shift to the Darnytskyi Bridge, Paton Bridge and other available crossings.
Before leaving home, it is worth checking four things: the current bridge operating mode, green metro line movement, “Kyivpastrans” notices about route changes, and whether an air alert is active with its threat level.
It is especially important for those traveling in the morning from the left bank to the center or to the right bank to have extra time: in recent days precisely operational closures and vehicle redirections repeatedly changed the usual traffic scheme across the Dnipro.
The situation may change even before morning
All the mentioned rules are valid as of the evening of October 4. Kyiv authorities warn that the transport scheme may be promptly changed depending on new attacks, the condition of the bridges, and decisions by security forces.
As of the morning of October 5, Kyiv is not left without crossings over the Dnipro, but the usual route cannot be considered guaranteed. In case of a new alert or infrastructure damage, buses and cars may be redirected to another bridge within minutes.
