Former Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Ruslan Kravchenko, may have faced additional scrutiny while leaving the country in September due to a note from NABU and SAP in the database of the State Border Guard Service. According to journalists, he was allowed into Poland only after a phone call from Kyiv.
This was reported on October 30 by "Ukrainska Pravda" citing its own sources in law enforcement agencies.
According to the publication's sources, on the night of September 14, Kravchenko arrived at the "Shehyni" border crossing on the border with Poland. During the departure processing, border guards took his passport and did not return the document for a long time.
According to UP sources, the reason for the delay was a note from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office in the border guards' information system.
Subsequently, according to the same sources, border crossing officials received a phone call from Kyiv, after which Kravchenko was allowed to cross the border. The former official then ended up in Austria.
However, the mere presence of a NABU and SAP note does not necessarily mean a ban on leaving Ukraine. Such information can be used to inform law enforcement agencies about the crossing of the border by a certain person or to conduct additional checks.
According to the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, restrictions on freedom of movement within criminal proceedings must have a legal basis. In particular, the court may require a suspect not to leave a designated place without permission or to hand over documents for leaving the country.
Therefore, the report about a phone call by itself does not prove that officials from Kyiv succeeded in canceling an official ban on Kravchenko's departure.
Currently, there is no public confirmation that there was a court decision prohibiting Kravchenko from leaving Ukraine. It is also not established who exactly called the border guards, with what purpose, and whether this call influenced the final decision to let him through.
Information about the circumstances of the border control passage comes from unnamed sources of journalists. There is no official confirmation of these details from the State Border Guard Service, NABU, or SAP at the moment.
We remind you that Ruslan Kravchenko left Ukraine on the night of September 14, when he still held the position of Prosecutor General. According to UP, he arranged a five-day official trip to Paris to participate in events regarding Ukrainian children under the auspices of PACE.
However, according to journalists, he was not on the list of participants of the relevant event. The trip ended on September 18, but on September 21, Kravchenko did not return to work. This fact was confirmed by the spokesperson of the Office of the Prosecutor General, Mariana Haіovska.
At the end of October, the former official claimed about an alleged preparation of an attack on him in Austria. Kravchenko suggested the involvement of NABU, SAP, and the President's Office in these actions but provided no evidence for his accusations.
NABU and SAP rejected these claims. Anti-corruption bodies stated that they consider the ex-official's words as an attempt to secure his protection abroad.
