Sumantra Maitra: Trump Should Just Set a Ukraine Ceasefire Date

Nevertheless, there is a way out. There are two logical ways to regain the peace momentum. First is the current approach, in which negotiations are ongoing while the war continues. One cannot be very optimistic about the end result. The process has too many cooks who can spoil the broth. A simpler solution is to set a date for a ceasefire—the Korean War or First World War model of peace. President Trump needs a win before the midterms. He can order his envoys to send another letter to European capitals, Kiev, and Moscow, setting a date for a ceasefire. 

July 4, American Independence Day, is a good date. The process is simple. There will be a ceasefire and troop pullout from both sides, creating what would be a de facto DMZ along the line of contact. The occupied areas by Russia will remain as they are. The U.S. will stop any further aid, martial or financial, to Ukraine. The war will stop on a date and time fixed, similar to the First World War, and the negotiations will continue after about a future order and peacekeeping. If either Europe or Russia refuses to follow through, the U.S. will follow the advice of one of the greatest IR grand-strategists of this country, Kelly Clarkson, and “just walk away.”

The structural reality is this: Europe isn’t capable of continuing the war without America, and, without America, European unity will split. If the Europeans do attempt to continue the war, the burden of the peace process should be on them as well. On the other hand, Russia is incapable of conquering the entirety of Ukraine.

It is not an American burden to bring all parties to the table and satiate their whims and changing war aims. The American president came to power committing to peace in Ukraine, but more than that, his commitment was to extricating American from the conflicts in Europe and the Middle East. There’s no potential loss here for him. If there is a ceasefire, he can claim that he achieved peace as he promised, and any breakdown of the ceasefire in future will not be on him. If there is no ceasefire, he can still blame Europe and Russia for not accepting his peace overtures. In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt made a “proclamation of neutrality” during the war between Russia and Japan, arguing that “the United States are on terms of friendship and amity with both the contending powers.” It was a beautiful strategy executed well; it eventually compelled Japan and Russia to seek American stewardship of the peace process. But in order for them to come to that point, the U.S. had to let them wage war for a while first without interfering. It is time to return to that sage wisdom. Just propose a fixed date and time for a ceasefire, and then walk away, Mr. President.

They are playing hawks on the cheap. Lithuania’s and Estonia’s militaries are rounding errors—12,228 in the former’s entire army, and just 3,750 in the latter’s force. They obviously wouldn’t be defeating Russia in any war.

Recently joining Kasčiūnas and Tsahkna was Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, whose Green Party has traded its pacifist past for the ghosts of Germany’s Prussian militarist glories. Berlin’s lame duck government remains sharply divided over NATO membership for Kiev, but she embraced Zelensky’s idea, opining that inclusion is one of the “different elements of a peace.” Yet Berlin is desperately unready for war, despite a welcome increase in military outlays. Presumably, she views that as Washington’s problem.

President-elect Donald Trump should announce on day one that Ukraine will not be joining NATO. Ever. That Ukraine is not worth war, especially a potentially nuclear conflagration. Washington should not accumulate allies like Facebook friends. The purpose of U.S. alliances should be to enhance American security, not provide foreign charity. In any conflict involving Ukraine and Russia it would be America, not Lithuania, Estonia, Germany, or the rest of Europe, which would be do the bulk of the fighting, including any nuclear escalation. Rather than protect the U.S., Kiev’s inclusion in NATO would make war more likely.

Hardly serious is Kasčiūnas’ contention that “you cannot send the message to Russia that they have at least informal veto power on NATO's enlargement.” No country has a right to join the alliance. New members should be invited only if doing so is in the interest of existing members. In any war with Russia, the U.S. would do the heavy lifting. Thus, avoiding an unnecessary war is a vital objective for Washington. If Estonia, Lithuania, and others want to play tough with Moscow, let them do so with the lives of their own peoples, not of Americans.

In ending the Russo–Ukrainian war, much must be open to negotiation. One issue which should not be, however, is NATO membership for Ukraine. President-elect Trump should make clear that Kiev will not be invited to join.

А мира не будет, по крайней мере такого как себе это представляют.

Эти блаженные не умеют останавливаться, поэтому вместо хреновых условий сейчас, получится еще хуже но потом.

Есть ошшшушение, что Трамп просто поставил себе некий дедлайн, после которого помощи никакой оказывать не будет.

И его не колышет будет к тому времени хоть худой но мир, или будет продолжаться война. Как и не колышут начертания линии фронта и прочие последствия его действий.

И несмотря на циничность, и то что Украине это как нож в спину, нужно признать что он в своем праве. Он пришел, озвучил свои условия. Не договорились? Ну тогда все. Он нам ничего не должен. И вывести на эмоции, как Байдена, не выйдет.

Вот только понимают и принимают ли это наши? Сомневаюсь.

Трамп и не давал ни какой помощи. Довозят помощь Байдена. И у Трампа совсем иные приоритеты.
