Questions and answers

How is the average bank rate calculated?

It is the average exchange rate quoted by 15–20 of Ukraine’s largest banks. The bank list is reviewed quarterly and focuses on institutions with broad branch networks and substantial capital.

This is an indicative rate designed to give a quick overview of market conditions.

What is the cash market rate?

It is the midpoint between the average buy and sell rates for the US dollar on Ukraine’s cash currency market. The calculation uses buy and sell offers published in the Cash Market section across Ukraine. Other currencies, apart from the US dollar, euro and Polish zloty, are cross-calculated through the US dollar using international foreign exchange market quotes.

The rate can be used as a market reference for hryvnia-denominated agreements and settlements, and as a quick indicator of conditions in Ukraine’s cash currency market.

What is the best available rate?

This benchmark is based on the average buy and sell offers for the US dollar on Ukraine’s cash currency market. Offers from across the country are included. Other currencies, apart from the US dollar, are cross-calculated through the dollar using international foreign exchange market quotes.

It provides a quick market reference and can help users compare the rate offered by a bank or currency exchange office.

When does the NBU update its official exchange rate?

The National Bank of Ukraine usually announces its official exchange rate between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. Kyiv time, and the rate generally takes effect on the following business day. The NBU also publishes a reference value around noon. On weekends and public holidays, the latest rate set for a business day remains in effect.

Because the official rate is set in advance, it may temporarily lag behind the market during periods of sharp currency movement. It is nevertheless widely used in contracts and accounting.

What is a currency fixing?

A fixing is a benchmark exchange rate recorded at a specified time. For cash US dollars, Current Ukraine uses the midpoint between wholesale buy and sell rates in Kyiv at 4:00 p.m. This benchmark may be used to record the agreed rate for cash transactions.

For non-cash US dollars, the fixing is the midpoint between bid and offer quotes on Ukraine’s interbank foreign exchange market at 1:00 p.m. It may be used as a reference for bank-transfer transactions.

Other currencies are fixed in the same way or cross-calculated through the US dollar using international foreign exchange market quotes at the fixing time.

Fixing data is normally published by 5:00 p.m. Kyiv time. On weekends and public holidays, the latest business-day fixing remains in effect.
